She currently writes for The Daily Telegraph. Before her move into Broadcasting, Anne was a Fleet Street newspaper executive. As Assistant Editor of The Mirror in the early 1980s she was the first woman to regularly edit a national newspaper. Anne was born in Liverpool and says her most formative education was gleaned not from convent boarding school or college but working on her mother`s market stall. She was made an Honorary Fellow of Liverpool John Moores University in 1996.
Anne divides her time between her house in Kensington and her home in Gloucestershire Cotswolds where she enjoys walking her dogs, an English Setter Sebastian and a Cocker Spaniel Florence. Anne is known for her red hair, her Giorgio Armani suits, her impatience with organisations that give customers a raw deal or slow-witted quiz show contestants and, of course, her wink.
She is married to journalist John Penrose, who also acts as her personal manager. Her daughter Emma, a graduate of New York University, is aged 32 and works as a freelance television and radio director, writer and presenter in London, New York and Washington.
She credits that most of her formative education was learned not from attending the convent boarding school or university, but from working on her mother's "marled" stall. She is one of the UK's most distinguished broadcasters and journalists and was made an Honorary Fellow of Liverpool's John Moores University in 1996.

Weakest Link host says doctors gave her six weeks to live
She is well-known (even in America) for her red hair, her dark Armani suits, her impatience with organizations that give customers a raw deal (she was the host of the prime time BBC 1 consumer affairs show Watchdog and, of course, her wink (which was developed when, in 1987, the director of right-to-reply show Points of View asked her not to wink - she subsequently winked at the end of every program.)
